Sylvia Gahan about Dave
For 19 years, Sylvia Gahan lived in a small house hidden in a humbily accomodated where her 4 children grew up. She greets visitors nervously, asks you to come into a cozy room filled with garden books, DM records and many small Krimskrams, which was given to her by her children in the course of many years. Then, she disappears in the kitchen and returns with a refreshing pot of tea. "Dave was never intensly interested in music, so I had never thought of a such a development. In school he was particularly interested in geography and archeology, before he studied design at the academy of arts. And he became strongly
enthusiastic for the pathfinders. He hated getting dirty, playing football and all that kind of stuff, but he loved getting into his canoe and going down through river rapids. I married 3 times. Daves first father left us when Dave was still a baby and then I married again when Dave was only 4 years of age, but my second husband died early. Dave had to go through many difficult things in the past. What I really admire is that he never asked for anything, because he knew that I could not give it to him. .He worked hard; delivered the newspapers in the morning, at night and worked on bank holidays, and on days off he washed the dishes in Hotels, worked as a teaboy on building sites, THE LOT...And when his schooltrips were coming up, he never once asked me if he could go along, because he knew that I couldn't afford it. Between the age of 16 and 18 I never really knew, what was going inside him-- he was very strange. All the boys started wearing make up and went to the Clubs in London. I believe they tried to meet famous people such as Gary Numan and David Bowie. To be honest, I do not like all of Depeche Mode's songs, e.g. Blasphemous Rumors; but I like
People are People very much. I never saw them on stage until last year because Dave never wanted me to. Thus, I said nothing when I went and when he came backstage he was really shocked to see me. He said: "How embarrassing to think that you saw me singing and dancing..." How did I like it? I could not leave fast enough, it was terrible, it was so loud! Dave makes me a lot of presents. Recently he showed up with a skirt and a blouse, he gave me the television and the stereo as well. And if my hair`s messy, he says: 'look, Mom, go get your hair done and he sends me to the hairdresser -- I hate to go to the hairdresser!.... " |
